I have always been a firm believer that things come in three.
Usually.
Not to be morbid, but when a great aunt or uncle passes, one of your friend’s grandparents usually passes too, and then someone’s neighbor or dog joins them at the pearly gates. I usually start waiting for the the third, knowing it will always be at a safe distance — never happening to me or anyone close enough to me.
Except for last month.
One beautiful Friday March afternoon I headed up to the City as I usually do once a month for acupuncture, a quick business meeting and then dinner with the hubs and friends. Sometimes when I leave acupuncture I am in a dazed and confused condition similar to being enlightened. The sun hits the buildings in an amazing afternoon glow of Spring on its way, the leaves on the few urban trees are fantastically green, and the new smell of California (weed wherever you go – and no, I’m not kidding), doesn’t bother me as much.
This particular Friday was one such day. Lucky for me I remembered where I parked and quickly got on the road. Though, while driving around the block to make my way to the Mission for my meeting, my car started driving a little funny. It was pulling to the right and sounded awful. It took me a whole city block to decide to pull over, and I did right across from the TenderNob hospital – which was perfect because it was a loading zone only, meaning there was a spot. I got out, and walked around my car to find a fantastically flat passenger side tire.
Crap.
AAA came in a flash and all was well. I missed my meeting, but still made it dinner with our dear friends. However, that Monday I took my car in and found out that my tires were basically bald and at the end of their road (so to speak). Eight hundred and some change later (thank you, Audi) they were as good as new.
Strike one.
That same Monday I left in the morning for my workout class and threw the bedding in the washer. We have this special mattress cover for our mattress (seriously, it’s the most amazing mattress ever) and I threw it in with the duvet cover thinking that it would be fine. Not so much.
When I got back from class I discovered the washer in weird state. It was in midcycle but not on. When I finally unlocked the washer and opened the door, I saw the inside barrel had become completely unhinged and dropped. It was bad. One week and a few hundred later it was almost good as new.
Strike two.
You can imagine that by this time I was just waiting for the third ball to drop. Was the dyer next? The dishwasher? What was going to break and cost us a small fortune?
Thankfully, it turns out that nothing broke. But we will be spending a small fortune. For the rest of our lives.
The Monday after the new tires and breaking the washing machine, the hubs and I got the surprise of a lifetime.
