This time around we missed the entire “welcome to the world, here are the new kids” email. We missed the Facebook announcement letting all our online friends know the boys arrived. The most anyone really got from us has been a text message and maybe a phone call. It’s been that busy, but that’s not even the half of it….
Before I get to what really has gone down in the first month of suddenly having three kids, I’ll get to what most people care about. The birth stats:
Baby A (on the bottom): Kai David McKinney, born October 6 at 10:31am. 6lbs 14oz
Baby B (on the top): Luca John McKinney, born October 6 at 11:05 am. 6lbs
No two parents could be happier that they finally arrived. I couldn’t be happier because I couldn’t live another day, let alone another week, walking around with these two big boys. Mark couldn’t be happier because it was the most intense pregnancy for him as well. Suffice to say, we both were more than ready for it to be over.
The boys came naturally into this world and we had the most amazing team to help us get there (more on this in another post).
But here’s what’s gone down…..
In addition to welcoming two little bundles of pure joy into our lives, we’ve also welcomed:
- 5 colds: Starting with Thad, then Mark, my mom, Luca (with a 100.5 temp) and now Kai
- 1 flu bug: Thad spent the weekend vomiting all over the house… including on me twice, the kitchen floor, daddy and then the dog
- 1 terrible haircut for Thad (during the puke fest… Don’t ask.)
- 1 case of mastitis for Mommy
- 2 trips to the ER (once for Luca, once for Mommy)
But hey, we’re alright! We have some amazing friends and family who’ve brought us meals, helped us with our visits to the ER, and have been general emotional support laughing with us along the way. We’re even more lucky to have my parents so close by… they have been our godsends, especially my mom.
We are beyond thrilled to have “the brothers” with us, and Thad is adjusting well. The first few weeks were bumpy for him because he started his new preschool, but thank god for birthdays! He turned two, so lucky for him everyone visiting the house right after the babies were here came with presents for Thad.
Here are some pictures in the raw of this past month.

aww! wow, I kind of forgot they were born on our birthday! What a fun thing, a happy sign 🙂 they were born 30 mins-ish apart? that’s crazy! Your first month has been crazy but you sound so chill about it and serene. Motherhood totally suits you 🙂 congrats to you and your boys!! xo

Wonderful wonderful! Congratulations! Everyone looks so healthy. Glad that y’all are doing better now. So sorry to hear about the mastitis. Haven’t had it myself but I hear it is horrible for the mama!

They look beautiful! Congrats to you for surviving the first month. My twins are five and a half months now and I can’t believe how fast the time has gone. You are making me remember how utterly exhausted we were for the first couple months. Thank you for sharing.

Carli, you are a warrior and a champion. Thinking of you often and acknowledging the insanity with you but also certain you guys are also rock solid. What a beautiful family you have…take care.

Thank you, Brooke! We are hanging in there… Two months down, one to go, is how I see it. The first three months are always the hardest :). Hope all is well!
